Really looking forward to hitting the lakes this spring for some fresh trout. My goal this year is to perfect my campfire trout. What's your favorite campfire recipe?
Pretty much anything I can cook on the grill at home. When camping I think we eat better than at home. Have not had a line out in years so no trout recipes. When camping I have a heavy base that holds a grill rack that swings over the fire so just like a BBQ almost. Use cast iron pans on it and also a dutch oven.
I like a cast iron skillet with bacon grease to fry the fish in. I mix up a zip lock bag with flour and johnnys season at home to roll the fish in and I leave the head & tail on.
- Wrap one whole potato in tin foil or aluminum foil. - Place wrapped potato into the coals of the campfire. - Wait about an hour. - Retrieve and unwrap perfectly baked potato. - Slice or mash potato to your preference. - Garnish generously with garlic powder. - Serve with butter or ketchup.
We do that when we camp also. I think cheese is also required on a potato with some chives of course.... It works great with corn on the cob to. Goes great with a big hunk of red meat
4 trout, cleaned and head removed 1/4 cup and 2 tablespoons cold butter, thinly sliced 12 sprigs fresh rosemary 1 teaspoon chopped fresh rosemary 2 teaspoons chopped fresh parsley salt and pepper to taste 4 cloves garlic, minced 2 lemon, halved and thinly sliced Place each trout onto a square of aluminum foil. Open them up so that the flesh is facing upwards. On one side of each fish, season with salt and pepper, half of the garlic, half of the chopped rosemary and half of the parsley. Top each fish with thin slices of butter, 3 rosemary sprigs and a few slices of lemon. Squeeze one of the remaining lemon slices over each fish. Enclose the seasoning inside each fish and wrap securely with the sheet of aluminum foil. Wrap each fish in an additional piece of aluminum foil. Place fish in the coals of a campfire or on a grill over a flame and cook for about 7 minutes on each side. If you can easily stick a fork into the fish, it is done. Cooking time will vary depending on the size of your fish and the fire. Allow to cool for a few minutes before opening to serve.
Take a baked potato an pull out a bit of the inside. put some trout and salmon in the cavern and cook it for 5-10 minutes.
Pull out prepackaged smoked salmon, Steelhead or kokanee & crackers and sit by the fire with a stiff Crown Royal.... AHHHHHH
I like to campfire grill a whole trout by running a stick through it’s mouth and out it’s arse, then stuffing the inside with lemon slices, rosemary and thyme and a touch of olive oil, salt and pepper. Place stick over the fire, turning it often and cook until the skin is crispy. Just be careful not to burn your stick in half...it’s not as good with ash on it. When car camping, I definitely dig the Dutch Oven setup. You can get gourmet AF with these things with some practice.
Here are some of my recent and favorite Dutch Oven creations... Campfire Paella Mountain Man Breakfast Beef and Mushroom Stew Dutch Oven Pizza (72 hour dough)
Just about any chow is better when cooked over an open fire.... Take the grouse you just got that day... wrap up the breast in bacon....fry up with mushrooms , onions and 'taters...Yum! Andy
LOL. It’s just water. I’ve had quite a few folks wondering about that jug over the years...including a park ranger. A gallon of shine would be proper.
