Did anyone attend Gary's seminar at the Sportsman's Show? I did and found it very interesting and informative. It sounds like we have a couple of good (bad) populations in the state down on the California boarder and over around Antelope. Has anyone hunted pigs in Oregon? Sounds like fun and something to do in the off seasons!
I'd like to try this, what kinds of licenses are required? Are they out on BLM or do you hunt on farmland?
Feral pig are considered a nuisance critter so all you need is a valid hunting license. Right now, in Oregon, it appears most feral pigs are on private land and unless you have permission to hunt on someone's property you have to catch them crossing BLM or forest land.
While unlikely, I would like to eliminate some feral hogs in Oregon... FROM ODFW WEBSITE, In Oregon, it is illegal to sell, or offer for sale, a hunt for feral swine on public or private lands. In general, there is little opportunity to hunt feral swine. There are still relatively few in the state (between 2,000-5,000 pigs) and most observations have been on private land. If you do see a feral swine while out hunting for another animal and you have landowner’s permission, you can take the animal. You will be doing wildlife and habitat a favor. Hunters looking for swine will see obvious signs in suitable areas such as in drainages with water or springs e.g. rootings, wallows and rubs in these areas.Photos of feral swine damage. Specific locations of feral swine are hard to come by as they are mostly on private lands and they move around. The major feral swine activity in Oregon is generally located in near Madras, Maupin, Fossil, Spray and Mitchell —the hot bed of activity being a large circle around the Antelope area. ODFW does not have a list of private land owners that are willing to allow hunters on their lands to control feral swine.
I haven't but have thought about it. From info that I have gathered there are a fair amount on the coast. I have some friends in Pacific City and I know that they have plucked 4 or 5 off their back deck with a .22 round right to the brain.
In Pacific City? Thats crazy I never knew, and I have friends there. Ive seen hogs in Northern California coast range though. A couple friends and I are going hog hunting in Southern Oregon and North of Prineville here in a month or so. Probably be knocking doors mostly but ya gotta start somewhere.
